GREENFIELD — Joseph Noblit was a one-man show when he first opened Yankee Mattress Factory in 1999, but today he employs seven people, and has opened a third showroom — in Greenfield.

Noblit’s son Nick, 25, now manages the company’s factory and showroom, which is located in Agawam, a showroom in Northampton, and the newest showroom at 70 Mohawk Trail next to D’Angelo’s sandwich shop.

“Now people in Franklin County won’t have to drive to Northampton,” said Nick Noblit. “And our products are factory-direct and so are our prices. It’s something only we can offer, because we are not only the store where you purchase the mattress, but the ones who build it for you.”

Noblit said all of the materials used to build a Yankee mattress come from the Northeast, so that allows the company to cut its prices up to 50 percent.

“We sell all size mattresses,” said Noblit. “We sell mattresses and sets and sets are most popular. Queen is our most popular size.”

Noblit said because Yankee Mattress is a local company — western Massachusetts — the money stays here.

He said the Greenfield showroom currently employs two people, but when business picks up, will probably hire more.

“All of our employees live in western Massachusetts,” he said.

Noblit said his father started the company 15 years ago and is currently a “silent partner.” He said he worked for national mattress companies for many years and then opened his own factory and showroom when he had learned all he needed to.

“He taught me everything,” said Nick. “I grew up around this business.”

Noblit said the store only carries the Yankee Mattress brand.

“We don’t compromise quality,” said Noblit. “Mattresses are meant to last seven to 10 years, but we extend our warranty to 20 years.”

Noblit said the company wanted to open a store in Greenfield to provide Franklin County with a local alternative.

“We only focus on western Massachusetts,” he said. “The person you are talking to on the phone is most likely the person who sold you the mattress.”

Noblit said Kevin Martin will manage the store in Greenfield.

“Delivery and setup is available and people can also arrange removal of old mattresses,” said Noblit.

He said all mattresses are made to order and are ready within a week of the order.

“We do odd sizes, too,” he said. “We can fit campers, boats and antique frames, to name a few.”

Noblit said customer service is very important to the company.

“We put more into service than sales,” he said. “We run low-pressure showrooms.”

Noblit said the company offers a 100-night comfort adjustment period.

“We will adjust the firmness or whatever else a customer needs within that 100-night period,” he said. “Most customers know within a couple of weeks whether a mattress is going to work for them.”

Yankee Mattress Factory is open Monday through Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
