Steve and Debra Schechterle have taken over the former Dad’s Liquors at 402 Federal St. in Greenfield and renamed it Four Corners Fine Wine & Spirits.

The couple from Gill plans to bring a “unique variety of wines, beers and liquors” to the north end of town.

Born and raised in the area, the couple said they simply want to offer people in town and the area one more choice.

Steve Schecterle, a realtor and real estate developer, has had a lot of experience in retail, especial running liquor stores, he said. He opened The Spirit Shoppe in South Deerfield more than three decades ago and his son currently owns and runs that store, as well as one in Sunderland.

Debra Schecterle said she currently owns her own business, Inside Designs in Gill. She has owned and run the interior design business for the past 15 years.

The couple renovated the 1,000-square-foot space and is stocking the shelves with local brews, as well as wines from across the country and the world.

“We’re working on fulfilling customers’ wishes,” said Debra. “We’ll be carrying unique wines from all over the world and featuring local beer.”

She said Four Corners will sell lottery tickets, but is not yet sure when that will start.

“It will be soon,” she said.

The couple said they wanted to take a new direction in their lives, so they used “private equity” to buy the business and get it up and running. They said they saw potential in the former Dad’s and decided to go for it.

Debra Schechterle said the couple has seen many regulars come into the store over the past two weeks — they opened on March 17 — but have also been happy to see new customers, who tell them they are “checking the place out.”

Steve Schechterle said he learned the liquor business when he opened The Spirit Shoppe in 1978.

“Now I’m looking to the future,” he said. “My son owns two liquor stores in South Deerfield and Sunderland and now my wife and I own this one. We’d like to own a total of five, collectively, in the area.”

The couple, who have four children between them, as well as five grandchildren, said they aren’t worried about spending so much time together each day.

“Not every couple could work together like this, but we have always spent a lot of time together and work really well together,” said Debra Schechterle.

She said she’ll do more of the customer service and marketing, while her husband will work more behind the scenes.

The Schechterles have hired an assistant manager and some part-time employees.

Four Corners Fine Wine & Spirits is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 11 p.m. They plan to hold a grand opening this spring and numerous wine and beer tastings on a regular basis.
