2 injured in Gill Route 2 crash

GILL — Two area women were injured in an afternoon accident on Route 2 Thursday.

Police and ambulance crews responded to the area of Barton Cove at about 4:45 p.m. for the rear-end collision.

Norma Denson, of Chappell Drive, Gill, had stopped and was waiting to turn left onto her street, when another car slammed into the back of hers, according to state police Sgt. Steven Jankowski.

The second car was driven by Roberta Mehan, of Athol.

Jankowski said a medical issue of Mehan’s may be to blame for the accident. The sergeant said there likely won’t be any charges in the accident.

Both women had visible injuries that did not appear to be serious, Jankowski said. They were both taken to Baystate Franklin Medical Center to be evaluated.

The eastbound lane of Route 2 was closed while police, ambulance crews, and tow truck drivers dealt with the accident scene, and reopened by 5:30 p.m.
