DEERFIELD — An elderly woman died at the scene of a crash on River Road Monday afternoon, according to police and the District Attorney’s office, and a young man was hospitalized.

An 83-year-old woman from Montague was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Nortwestern District Attorney’s office, and the other driver, a 19-year-old man from South Deerfield, was transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield with nonlife-threatening injuries.

Deerfield Chief of Police John Paciorek Jr. said the accident occurred around 3:06 p.m., when a late model Chevrolet Impala driven by the Deerfield man and a Chevrolet Prizm driven by the Montague woman collided head-on.

Police were not releasing the woman’s identity Monday evening, pending notification of her next of kin, and the District Attorney’s office release identified neither victim by name.

Paciorek said there were no passengers in either car.

River Road remained closed to through traffic late into the evening as local and state police investigated the scene of the crash, which occurred on a curve just south of 520 River Road, about a tenth of a mile south of Atlas Farm.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation by the state police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the Deerfield Police Department and state police detectives attached to the Northwestern District Attorney’s office, Paciorek said.

The Deerfield Emergency Medical Services, the Deerfield and South Deerfield fire departments responded to the scene, as well as the law enforcement agencies listed.
