Worcester County car chase reaches Orange
ORANGE — A multi-department police pursuit of a suspect in an armed carjacking in Worcester County reached town Sunday morning.
Trooper Ann McDonough, attached to the Athol barracks of the Massachusetts State Police, said the carjacking occurred around 6 a.m. in Fitchburg, where a local homeless man armed with a knife allegedly stole a bright orange Subaru with a kayak rack.
Westminster police first located the bright orange car, McDonough said, and the car and driver fled west on Route 2, with two state troopers and officers from other departments joining the chase.
McDonough said the driver took exit 16 in Orange, got back on Route 2 eastbound and finally abandoned the vehicle in Gardner.
The driver fled into the woods but was arrested by Westminster police after he tried to carjack another car on a side street.
Arrested was Matthew Mack, 29, and homeless in the Fitchburg area. Fitchburg police said Mack is charged with armed robbery, larceny of a motor vehicle, vandalizing property, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault with a dangerous weapon.
