Oil spill ties up Canal Street in Turners Falls

TURNERS FALLS — At least 10 gallons of diesel fuel spilled out of a 55-gallon drum that had tipped over in the back of a pickup Wednesday morning, according to the Turners Falls Fire Department.

The spill was reported about 7:35 a.m., with the fuel extending from the pedestrian bridge near the old paper mill to the Canal Street intersection with Fifth Street, approaching the bridge to Greenfield.

That stretch of Canal Street was closed off while the town Highway Department spread sand to absorb the oil, and the Fire Department applied eight bags of Speedy-Dri oil absorbent. Also, the state Department of Environmental Protection was notified.
