Montague Cable Advisory Committee member resigns

MONTAGUE — Charles Kelley is off the Cable Advisory Committee, if he was ever on.

At this week’s meeting of the Board of Selectmen, Kelley was forced to resign his seat for committee meetings he said he has not yet had the opportunity to attend.

The Board of Selectmen appointed Kelley to the committee in August.

Mark Fairbrother, chairman of the Board of Selectmen, said the appointment was made with the caveats that Kelley resign his conflicting position with the Montague Community Television board of directors and that everybody play well together.

The Cable Advisory Committee is in the process of negotiating the town’s cable contract with Comcast, an agreement that includes a community access channel and funding for MCTV.

Fairbrother said the appointment was not popular with some people and that Kelley’s failure to resign immediately from the conflicting position inflamed the issue.

“By not doing that you are throwing gas on the fire for people who are less than thrilled that you are on the Cable Advisory Committee,” Fairbrother said.

Kelley said he had already resigned verbally, stopped attending the MCTV meetings and did not realize there was a deadline to submit his resignation in writing, which he said he did Monday morning.

Kelley resigned from the Advisory Committee, effective immediately, after Fairbrother said he would bring his removal from the committee to a vote.
