Greenfield fireworks fund drive starts Monday
Greenfield — The town is gearing up for its Fourth of July Celebration, which includes a fireworks display, and is once again looking for donations to help pay for the display.
Members of the Greenfield Recreation Department and Recreation Commission will be on the intersection of Main and Federal streets to collect fireworks donations beginning on Monday from noon to 1 p.m. and 5 to 6 p.m. each day until July 3. They will also be out there collecting on June 22 and 29 from 10 to 11 a.m.
The celebration will be on July 6 this year, with a rain date of July 7.
The Recreation Department needs to raise at least $18,000 a year to put on the display.
Christy Moore, director of the department, said she is encouraging all individuals, families, groups, businesses and organizations to make a donation.
Moore said the department does not receive funding from the town for the fireworks display, so must rely completely on donations.
“Keep the fireworks alive in Greenfield,” she said. “We couldn’t do this without all of the help and donations we get each year,” she has said many times.
Moore said this year’s celebration, like those in the past, will include numerous vendors and lots of music and activities.
Fireworks will begin at 9:30 on the night of the celebration. The Greenfield Military Band will play from 8:20 to 9:30 p.m. and Daisy Skelton will sing the National Anthem just before the fireworks begin.
Music and entertainment will begin at 4 p.m.
Donation canisters will also be placed in many local businesses.
Also, checks may be made payable to Town of Greenfield and sent to: Greenfield Recreation Fireworks Fund, 20 Sanderson St., Greenfield, MA 01301.
