Newton School asst. principal takes job in Shutesbury
SHUTESBURY — A Northampton woman who is an associate principal in Greenfield has been named the principal at Shutesbury Elementary School.
Maureen T. Ryan, associate principal at Newton School, will take over as Shutesbury’s principal July 1, replacing Principal Bob Mahler, who will retire at the end of this school year.
Mahler, 61, has been the principal of Shutesbury Elementary for the past seven years.
Ryan, who lives in Florence, has been working at Newton School for the past two years. Before taking the position there, she worked as a physical education teacher and administrator at R.K. Finn Ryan Road School in Florence and was a physical education and health teacher at the Sullivan School in Holyoke from 1997 to 2007.
Ryan also was chosen as a finalist for principal at Ryan Road School, alongside David M. Potter and Sarah J.B. Madden, who ended up winning the position.
According to her resume, Ryan holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Bridgewater State University and a master’s degree in educational administration from Springfield College.
She said she looks forward to starting her new position at Shutesbury Elementary, which she called a “real gem of a job.”
“It’s a small rural school,” she said. “It’s a great staff, very supportive community.”
Last Sunday, Ryan participated in Shutesbury’s Lake Wyola Road Race, where she had the opportunity to meet local running enthusiasts as well as some of the students she will be working with.
“I thought it would make sense for the new principal to go up and run it, so I did. I met some people in the community, and it’s a wonderful, welcoming community,” she said. “Everyone has been so welcoming and supportive. I am really looking forward to working with such an involved and active community.”
