Cafe to open in Greenfield transit center on Monday

Will offer Adams Donuts goodies (hot dogs, too)

GREENFIELD — Bus passengers, and anyone else who wants a fresh doughnut with their hot or iced coffee will be able to get one at the new cafe opening Monday morning at 7 in the John W. Olver Transit Center on the corner of Bank Row and Olive Street.

Ken Cook, owner of Adams Donut Shop on Federal Street, will open a smaller version of his Federal Street shop in the center. It will be located on the south side of Franklin Regional Transit Authority’s lobby.

Cook said he will serve doughnuts, muffins, bagels and other pastries throughout the day, as well as steamed hot dogs and Pepsi products for lunch. He said he will probably offer prepared sandwiches, as well.

The cafe will be open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays. The lobby is open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the week.

“I heard there was going to be cafe space here, so I talked with Tina (Cote) before construction began on the building,” said Cook.

Cote, who is FRTA administrator, said the transit authority currently has a short-term, temporary lease with Cook to “see how things go.” She said FRTA will most likely offer a longer lease if all goes well.

Cook said about 60 people work in the building — 10 for FRTA and 40 for Franklin Regional Council of Governments.

Cote said FRTA records about 600 passenger trips each weekday, so there are a lot of potential customers within and just outside the building each day.

Cook is also hoping to draw customers from surrounding businesses, the courthouse, now, and when construction begins, and the apartment buildings just across the parking lot.

“We wanted a local, established business in here,” said Cote. “We wanted to make sure it was going to be successful. We’re very excited about this.”

“This is a perfect time to open a cafe in the center,” she said. “We opened for business one year ago.”
