Mid-spring golf tournament will raise money for Warm the Children

GREENFIELD — The sheriff department’s annual golf tournament to raise money for Warm the Children is coming fast and still needs a few more teams to join.

Norma Lovett, who works for the sheriff’s department and is organizing the event, said this year is its ninth year.

Lovett said the tournament typically raises about $7,000 for The Recorder’s Warm the Children fund, which provides winter clothing for the area’s neediest children.

She said 36 teams of four will compete in the “shotgun” tournament this year.

According to Rich Fahey, advertising director for The Recorder, it is the one single event that raises the most money for Warm the Children each year.

Lovett said she is still looking for sponsors, who pay $50 for the designation.

She said the tournament will be held May 13 beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Country Club of Greenfield on Country Club Road.

Winning teams receive prizes.

“We do this because helping the children of our area is very important to us,” said Lovett.

Sheriff Christopher Donelan said in an earlier interview that some of the children who receive warm clothing each year are the children of inmates, so it makes the effort even more important and meaningful to the department.

For more than 25 years, children throughout Franklin County have been warmed each winter by the generosity of strangers donating to Warm the Children. The annual clothing drive has been serving at least 1,000 of them each year.

The Recorder collects donations, Wilson’s Department Store buys the clothing and coordinates the volunteers — between 40 and 50 each year — and local social service agencies find the children.
