GCC burst-pipe cleanup costs $56K
Pura: State reimbursements likely coming
GREENFIELD — A burst pipe at Greenfield Community College last month cost the school some $56,000 in cleanup and repairs — although the state may reimburse most or all of it, said President Robert Pura.
In the early morning hours of Sunday, Feb. 10, a frozen pipe burst on the third floor of the college’s north wing. About two inches of water accumulated in the third-floor offices, traveled down the hall and seeped down into second-floor classrooms.
Pura said quick responses by the Greenfield Fire Department and college staff helped contain the damage. GCC then hired Complete Restoration Solutions to finish immediate cleanup — which ultimately cost about $26,000.
There was some damage to the college’s flooring, wallboard and ceilings, he said. Cleanup crews focused on removing trapped moisture in the walls. About four inches of wallboard were removed from the floor line and dehumidifiers and blowers were run for days.
Eventually, insulation was replaced within the walls, sheet rock was repaired, walls were patched and painted and the baseboard was replaced. The total repair costs, not including services by Complete Restoration Solutions, was about $30,000, said Pura.
Five classrooms and eight faculty offices on the north wing’s second and third floor were not available for eight school days, he said. Temporary classroom and office spaces were set up that Sunday, and school officials had expected they could be used for as long as two weeks.
Pura said that the college sent a bill to the state’s division of capital asset management and maintenance, but it could be weeks or months before a reimbursement is sent. The state will need to make sure that the repairs were all a result of the burst pipe, he said, and that the damage wasn’t caused beforehand.
School officials still aren’t sure why the pipe burst, but said it is likely rapidly changing temperatures had some impact. The county had been hit by snow the preceding Friday and Saturday, as a part of Winter Storm Nemo.
