Ashfield election  set for Saturday

ASHFIELD — Voters go to the polls Saturday to elect a third Selectboard member, who will serve at least until the annual town meeting in May.

Voting will take place from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in Town Hall.

Former board member Thomas Carter is the only candidate on the ballot, although there may be write-in candidates. He was unanimously nominated by 63 residents at a town caucus in December.

Carter served on the board from 1984 to 1995 and has spent about 28 years serving on town boards, as a selectman, sewer commissioner and on the Finance Committee.

He will be filling the unexpired term left by former Selectboard Chairman Douglas Field, who stepped down for health reasons, following several contentious meetings.

Selectboard members Paullette Leukhardt and Ron Coler opted to call a special election for the four-month term, to reduce the chance of tie votes on important issues, as the town goes through its budget planning process in the spring.
