Principal sets goals for Frontier

DEERFIELD — Frontier Regional School Principal Martha Barrett plans to improve math MCAS scores, reduce the percentage of students recommended for remedial algebra by 10 percent and reduce the number of dropout students.

Barrett presented her 2012 to 2013 school improvement plan to the Frontier Regional School Committee with four goals in mind.

These are to improve the math scores for seventh- and eighth-graders by four aggregate points for the spring 2013. Barrett also wants to reduce the percentage of eighth-grade students recommended for remedial algebra by fall of 2013. To do this, the school would increase the student-teacher contact time by changing the daily schedule, add a math extension class and increase middle school participation in after school programs by 10 percent.

Barrett hopes to reduce the number of students who drop out and lower the rate to 0.5 percent. The drop-out rate for the 2010-2011 school year was 2.3 percent. The rate for the current school year is unknown. To do this, the school would refer students to the student writing center for individual attention with a teacher.

The last goal is to improve civility in the building between students and staff as demonstrated in the decrease of discipline slips by 4 percent. To counter bad behavior, teachers would be required to greet students as they enter their classrooms.

Ongoing goals include increasing participation and performance in advanced placement courses in English, math and science through the acquisition of a “Mass Math and Science Initiative” grant. So far, enrollment has increased from 51 to 148 students.

Some recent goals the school district has achieved include expanding the foreign language requirement to a two-year minimum for all students. This is required by the state Common Core Standards. Currently, 80 percent of Frontier students are taking two years of the same language.

Another recent accomplishment: The school increased the health requirement to four years to implement healthy living and lifestyle goals.
