Fashion Bug closes

GREENFIELD — The Fashion Bug, a women’s clothing store on the Mohawk Trail, has closed up shop.

Within the Home Depot shopping center, all that remains of the store is a “retail for lease” sign on the window. The storefront sign and merchandise have been removed.

The store has been in Greenfield for at least 15 years.

The closure fulfills plans announced by corporate owner Ascena Retail Group Inc. to shut down all Fashion Bug stores by early 2013.

In June, Ascena purchased the corporate owner of the Fashion Bug, Charming Shoppes Inc. for about $890 million. Charming Shoppes also operated Lane Bryant, Catherines Plus Sizes and the direct marketing business Figi’s. Ascena is a Suffern, N.Y., based retail company that markets clothing to women. It also owns Dressbarn, Maurices and Justice clothing stores. Maurices also has a local branch in the Big Y plaza on the Mohawk Trail.

Following the buyout, Ascena announced plans to close all the Fashion Bug stores by early 2013.

Store management declined comment. The corporate office did not return calls for comment by press time.
