Churches to ring bells at noon on Christmas
GREENFIELD — On a Christmas morning 12 years ago, with thoughts of the hymn “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day,” parishioners of the Second Congregational Church spontaneously climbed to the balcony and rang the steeple bell for several minutes.
Since then, the bell ringing has become a yearly tradition, said Greenfield resident and church parishioner Doug Clarke. Other churches around the town have joined in, ringing their bells at noon for about 10 minutes.
“Hearing a number of other bells all ringing, it really is kind of special. It just sort of reinforces what Christmas is all about,” said Clarke.
“With all that’s going on in the world and the country these days, every gesture we make, no matter how small, can be comforting to all of us,” he said.
Clarke said that three other Greenfield churches will take part in the tradition this year and ring their bells at noon on Christmas Day: All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church, Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
The invitation is open to any church that wants to participate, said Clarke.
