Orange shooting suspect held
ORANGE —The alleged shooter is in custody following an attack Sunday morning that sent one person to the hospital with three bullet wounds, according to state police.
The shooting occurred on Sunset Drive, a short dead-end street neighboring South Cemetery off South Main Street, according to Trooper John Daigle of the Athol State Police Barracks.
Daigle said the suspect allegedly shot someone three times and was arrested by officers of the Orange Police Department around 9:25 a.m., when the state police were called to the scene.
According to a statement from the Northwestern District Attorney’s office, Corey Sutton of Montague was arrested Sunday and charged with attempted murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, a gun, in connection with the incident.
The victim is currently hospitalized and his status is unknown, according to Mary Carey, spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office,
The incident is under investigation by the Orange Police Department and Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, Carey wrote, and Sutton is expected to be arraigned in Orange District Court at 9 a.m. today.
Trooper Robert John of the same barracks said the shooting occurred at 24 Sunset Drive, where it appeared a man shot someone three times with a .45 caliber handgun.
John said state police responded with three cruisers but Orange police already had a suspect in custody.
The call log showed the victim was stabilized at a Leominster hospital before he was transported to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.
John said the Franklin County State Police detectives unit, ballistics and crime scene services were requested for the investigation.
