GCC hosting food drive on campus
GREENFIELD — In an effort to help the Greenfield Community College food pantry fill 60 Thanksgiving Day bags, the GCC Student Senate will collect food in the core building’s lobby this week, each day from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Collection boxes are already located around campus, but the additional central drop-off times will hopefully increase exposure and donations, said Missy Eich-Richardson, coordinator of GCC Student Life.
It is the second year the pantry has offered Thanksgiving bags as a supplement to monthly food allowance, said Julie Shaw-MacDougall, the college’s special programs coordinator.
“We rely heavily on community donations to fill the pantry on a monthly basis and extra donations in order to fill enough bags for those who need them around the holidays,” she said.
The bags contain everything but the turkey, said Shaw-MacDougall. Items will include bread mix, cranberry sauce, pie crust and filling, potatoes, stuffing and vegetables.
The students had a good first collection day, said Eich-Richardson. People dropped off several boxes of stuffing, some cans of green beans and even baking supplies like Splenda and brown sugar, she said.
Anyone who would like to donate for Thanksgiving Day, or in general, should contact Shaw-MacDougall at 413-775-1398.
