2 stores robbed Friday morning
GREENFIELD — Robberies of two Greenfield stores, occurring in a span of two hours early Friday morning, have resulted in the arrest of a Turners Falls man and an unrelated ongoing investigation and search for a second suspect.
Lt. Dan McCarthy said that Adam Conway, 31, was arrested and charged with armed robbery of the Cumberland Farms store on Federal Street.
Surveillance video from the 4 a.m. incident led Greenfield Police to contact Montague Police for assistance, said McCarthy. Conway was found and arrested at 9 a.m. at his last known address: 19 Avenue C. He was then transported to the Greenfield station shortly after.
The Cumberland Farms clerk who called police described the suspect as a white male with a red goatee and a windbreaker covering his face. The suspect did not pull a gun, but did tell the clerk he had one before taking an undisclosed amount of money, said McCarthy.
Conway had not yet been arraigned as of Friday afternoon, McCarthy said.
Two hours later, at 6:20 a.m., police received a call about an armed robbery at Valley Mart on Mill Street. McCarthy said that money was taken and that the suspect threatened to shoot employees as he left the scene.
The suspect — described as a male with black hair and wearing an orange sweatshirt — was last seen traveling south on Deerfield Street, said McCarthy. The investigation is ongoing, and police encourage anyone with information to come forward.
McCarthy does not believe there is a connection between the two Friday morning robberies, or with an armed robbery that occurred at CVS on Tuesday night.
Employees from Cumberland Farms and Valley Mart declined comment. Both stores use video surveillance.
