Former GCC Foundation director thanked for service at annual meeting

GREENFIELD — A portion of Saturday’s Greenfield Community College Foundation Annual Meeting was dedicated to thanking Allen Davis, the former executive director of annual giving, for his service.

Davis had helped direct the foundation’s annul fund since 1994, raising money for the school’s projects and scholarships.

He was laid off this summer in a series of budget cuts the college made when faced with decreased state contributions and a 3 percent enrollment decline.

“Allen Davis is a passionate leader in the mission of Greenfield Community College and his voice on behalf of serving that mission will be missed,” said GCC President Robert Pura at the meeting.

Pura read a quote from Davis, which he said summed up the man’s purpose: “If Amherst (College) were to close today, those students would find another college to go to, But if GCC were to close, where would those students go?”

Chris Harris, a GCC alumna, said Davis taught her the “art of fundraising” when she interned with the foundation in 1998.

“It was a relationship that would change my life,” she said at the meeting. “Over the years I came to realize that everything I learned from Allen has led to success and happiness in all parts of my life.”

Davis, who was given a standing ovation by those gathered at the meeting, briefly addressed the attendees.

“I just want to say, it’s been a joy to work with you,” he said. “Thank you so much,”
