Calling all crossing guards
Deerfield seeks to hire a couple more
DEERFIELD — Students at Deerfield Elementary School may get a surprise as they head to and from school, at least for the first few months of the year.
Assistant Principal Clay Connor is temporarily filling in as school crossing guard at Pleasant Street as the town looks to fill the position.
The town has been looking for a new crossing guard since the last one retired this year. There are two crossing guards in town.
The remaining crossing guard would be posted at the Elm Street and North Main Street crossing by Jerry’s Place.
One crossing guard is usually posted at Pleasant Street. While the town looks for a second full-time guard, the Pleasant Street guard will move to the center of town and Connor will fill in at the elementary school.
The position pays $20 per hour or roughly $100 per week. The position is paid through the Police Department budget.
There are two half-hour shifts at 8:10 a.m. and 2:50 p.m.
If interested, contact the Deerfield Elementary School at 413-665-1131.
Greenfield Public Schools also have two vacancies for crossing guards.
There are currently four guard positions filled. Transportation Coordinator Jesse Sinclair said he is optimistic that the school department can fill the remaining two slots by the first day of school on Sept. 2.
