Steak and seafood restaurant coming to Federal St.

GREENFIELD — The downtown will soon add a steak and seafood restaurant to its list of eateries.

Jim Sands, owner of Zoe’s Fish House in Hadley, said he has teamed up with Paul Cheng, who has owned The Greenfield Grille with Joseph Poirier for the past five years.

Sands said Zoe’s is not moving to Greenfield.

“This has nothing to do with Zoe’s. It will be something different,” said Sands. “We’re finalizing all of the details, so we’ll have more to say next week.”

The Greenfield Grille, which opened five years ago in the spot held for decades by the landmark Famous Bill’s Restaurant, is up for sale and will decrease its hours, its owner announced Wednesday.

“Joe wants out and Paul contacted me to ask if I had any interest,” said Sands.

“I think that people will find that we’ve come up with a fun concept,” he said. “And the pricing will be right for the area.”

Poirier, 69, said in an earlier interview that he’ll be spending more time in a house he owns in Mexico and that the restaurant needs someone who can give it hands-on attention.

Sands said he and Cheng will do just that with a manager they have hired.

Poirier, the former president of Greenfield Savings Bank, and Cheng, a local restaurant owner, entered the auction as curious spectators and left as co-owners when Famous Bill’s was sold. They purchased the 8,430-square-foot building, its liquor license and furnishings on a whim for about $280,000.

In the six months after he purchased the restaurant, the kitchen was completely rebuilt, the building’s wiring system updated and bar expanded.

The main restaurant seats about 130 people and the function room can accommodate another 130 for a plated dinner or a couple hundred for an event where people aren’t sitting at tables.

It is not yet clear whether the Grille’s employees will stay and whether any others will be hired.

Just in case no one has noticed... Kali B's Wings & Things are doing one heck of a business. I like the idea of surf & turf also. Good Luck on your new venture.
