Sunderland to vote on capital override Saturday

SUNDERLAND — Though there are no contests in the town election, townspeople will have to head to the polls to at least vote on a Proposition 21/ 2 override to fund capital stabilization.

The town election is Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sunderland Elementary School.

Voters will have to decide whether to pass an override for $100,000, which would be used to fund future capital projects like building repairs and road infrastructure.

The capital stabilization override would help the town save money for future projects, Selectmen’s Chairman Scott Bergeron said.

“Our goal is to fund it in a responsible way,” Bergeron said.

Currently, capital projects are funded through one-time windfalls, such as surplus.

Because other debts are expiring, the new override would not raise the tax rate.

The town is retiring its debt for the elementary school reconstruction this year. As a result, the tax rate would drop by 33 cents, or by 2.4 percent. For a house valued at $200,000, the annual tax would decrease by $66.

The capital stabilization override that would replace that debt would add 29 cents to the tax rate, or 2.1 percent. The net rate reduction is 4 cents per $1,000 valuation. For a house valued at $200,000, the annual tax would drop $8.

There are 14 seats up for election this year.

The following incumbents are all seeking additional terms:

Thomas Fydenkevez for Board of Selectmen, Mary Ann Kowaleck for assessor, Kristy Paciorek for Board of Health, Lyn Roberts for Frontier Regional School Committee, Gregory Gottschalk and Keith McFarland for Sunderland Elementary School, Traci Sackrey for school representative to park trustees, Janet Bergeron for Riverside Cemetery trustees, David Wissemann for library trustee, and Natalie Blais, Gerald Bridwell and Valerie Voorhois for Sunderland Public Library trustees, Daniel Murphy for the Planning Board and Robert Duby for town moderator.
