Greenfield surgeon named local clinician of the year

GREENFIELD — A Greenfield orthopedic surgeon has been named as a local Community Clinician of the Year.

Members of the Franklin District Medical Society selected Jeffrey Hayer for the annual award. The Greenfield native and current resident has worked at the Franklin Orthopaedic Group on Riddell Street for 31 years, where he specializes in treating problems related to bones, joints, associated muscles and nerves.

“I’m honored,” said Hayer, adding that he was “extremely blessed to have tremendous support” from his office, hospital nurses and technicians and his fellow physicians. He thanked doctor Thomas Echeverria, who has been his long-time partner at the Greenfield-based medical practice, and members of his family.

Hayer will receive the award at the Franklin District Medical Society’s annual meeting on Wednesday at the Blue Heron in Sunderland. There are 55 members in the local society.

He has served in the past as president of both the Baystate Franklin Medical Center physicians’ organization and the hospital’s medical/dental staff. He’s a member of the Massachusetts Medical Society, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Medical Association.

Hayer earned his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College and his medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School. He then went on to complete a general surgery internship and residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and had an orthopedic residency at the University of Connecticut.

The state’s medical society established the Community Clinician of the Year Award in 1998. Each of the 20 district medical societies across Massachusetts annually choose one physician for the award.
