BB gun taken from GMS student

GREENFIELD — Greenfield Middle School leaders confiscated an unloaded BB gun from a student last week but said there was no evidence it was brought in to harm any students.

Principal Gary Tashjian said he found out about the plastic, 8-inch gun on Monday. A sixth-grade student had brought the gun to school on Friday and another student was holding it for him when it was confiscated.

“This was a huge mistake by two young students who were friends and were not thinking about consequences or their school,” wrote Principal Gary Tashjian in a letter sent home to parents last week. “Any type of weapon, or toys that mimic weapons, are not allowed in school, on school grounds, on students or in their belongings at any time.”

The superintendent’s office, Greenfield School Committee and Greenfield Police Department were all notified. An investigation resulted in “strong disciplinary action for both students,” wrote Tashjian.

The principal said he notified families — by letter and through an automated “robocall” to their homes — to alert them about the event and invite them to have conversations with their own children about not bringing weapons to school.
