Controversial cartoon

Tuesday, December 26, 2017

Nate Beeler’s cartoon published in a recent Recorder propagates an outrageous fallacy that demands a response.

The cartoon, neither funny nor accurate, suggests that Donald Trump’s declaring Jerusalem to be Israel’s capital is inconsequential to the conflict. It suggests that no matter what the United States says about geopolitical borders, Palestinians will promote “wiping Israel off the map.”

Beeler is guilty of the hate-mongering he portends to be exposing when he frames the problem as a Palestinian agenda to destroy Israel. This argument erases Palestinian grievances, suggesting that Israel’s long documented human rights abuses, violent displacement, accelerating land theft and discrimination are insignificant.

As local members of Jewish Voice for Peace, we are committed to Palestinian human rights and to fighting the wall-building, white supremacist agendas of both the Trump and Netanyahu administrations. We call for a U.S. foreign policy that is accountable to international human rights standards, and which has the integrity that true peace requires. As we see Islamophobia and antisemitism on the rise in the U.S. and Europe, it is essential that we call out these distortions that obscenely justify Palestinian suffering while ignoring the true threats to democracy and justice. These threats are in the halls of power, funded by our tax dollars and buoyed by unbalanced media coverage.
