Smith Botanic Garden talk Feb. 20

TURNERS FALLS — On Feb. 20 at 7 p.m., the Greenfield Garden Club will host Michael Marcotrigiano, professor of biological sciences and director of the Botanic Garden at Smith College in Northampton at the Great Falls Discovery Center, 2 Avenue A.

Marcotrigiano’s topic is titled “The Smith College Botanic Garden: Past, Present and Future.”

The Botanic Garden of Smith College was founded over 100 years ago by L. Clarke Seelye, the college’s first president. The Botanic Garden contains more than 8,000 taxa of plants that are outdoors in gardens and in the glass houses. The Arboretum (tree and shrub collection) is scattered throughout the campus and contains some trees original to the early days of the college.

There will also be a brief update on local invasive plants by Cynthia Boettner, Invasive Plant Control Initiative coordinator, preceding the slide-filled lecture, with refreshments to follow.

Both programs are free and open to the public.
