Savoring the Seasons: Find fantastic food and fun at local farm markets

Last week, I heard from Gloria Meluleni of Coyote Hill Farm in Bernardston about the season’s opening of the Bernardston and Northfield farmers markets — where Coyote Hill sells their great produce. Many of you who read this column will remember Gloria and Ervin from the Greenfield Winter Farmers Market. I love shopping and visiting with friends in Greenfield every Saturday when I stand in the weekly peace vigil on the Greenfield town common near the weekly market. I’m excited that Conway’s farmers market opening day is today so I can visit my friends there and get a mid-week installment of fresh food.

Gloria’s message inspired me to look up other farmers markets in Franklin County. I was amazed to see so many listed on CISA’s website (www.buylocalfood.org).

Which farmers markets do you visit? Are there other farmers markets in Franklin County that aren’t on this list? Please let me know.

I want to visit some different local farmers markets. Whenever I travel, I seek out farmers markets and food co-ops in areas I’m visiting. I used to shop at a farmers market next door to where my mother lived in Santa Rosa, Cal. Last year, I spent time in Hawaii for work and visiting where I lived when I was a little kid (I went to kindergarten and first grade in Kailua on the island of Oahu). I found a food co-op in downtown Honolulu, and a wonderful farmers market in Hale’iwa.

This summer I’ll be visiting friends in Bangor, Maine, and attending a music festival in Michigan. I’ll definitely visit the Belfast Food Co-op and I’m looking for farmers markets in Maine and Michigan.

Where are you traveling this summer? Across the county or across the country, I hope you’ll find the local farmers markets and food co-ops and enjoy locally grown food!

Asparagus As Art With Found Objects

How are you enjoying asparagus this season?

Sometimes, just fresh and raw spears from the garden. Mostly, just washed and lightly steamed.

It depends on what else is in the fridge or kitchen cupboard.

Sue steams and chills asparagus then serves cold tossed with a little olive oil and capers.

Mary marinates steamed asparagus with rosemary balsamic vinaigrette, refrigerates it, and eats as is or chopped and mixed with cold rice or couscous and chunks of cold, baked chicken.
