‘Simple Telling’

A little boy

In a stained, oversized shirt

Tugs on my white sleeve

To color

A rainbow —

Again.

The paper is cream-white

Not perfect

Wrinkled

But it’s the universe

To his eyes,

When it has my name next to his

Written,

With a stubby crayon.

My tongue is glued

Firmly

To my bottom teeth

And I can’t say,

“Why don’t we draw something else?”

Lighted chandeliers

Glistening winter snow

Happy Thanksgiving meals

The things he’s only seen

In fairytales;

I wonder if I can bring them

To him,

To his life

Without offending —

Just to tell him,

Simply, that

They exist, too
