Greenfield High Student Council to take ‘polar plunge’

GREENFIELD — At about 1:20 p.m. today, members of the Greenfield High School Student Council will run into the frigid Atlantic Ocean.

The “polar plunge,” which they’ll take part in along with student council members from across the state, is part of an effort to raise money for the Special Olympics. The Massachusetts Association of Student Councils’ annual conference begins today in Hyannis.

High school teacher and faculty adviser Angela Mass said that 17 of her students will be attending the three-day conference, which, for the first time, is kicking off with the polar plunge event.

The team of students will bring at least $1,110 with them to the event. Students raised money on their own and held a fundraiser last fall, allowing high school students the chance to wrap Principal Donna Woodcock in duct tape.

Students will attend peer-led workshops at the conference, including one Greenfield High School seniors are running on group dynamics.

They’ll also learn the results of the annual awards and elect this year’s officers.
