Bulletin Board: UMass skaters lose to Bobcats in shootout
Jordan Samuels-Thomas and Sam Anas scored goals in the shootout Sunday as Quinnipiac skated to a 2-2 overtime tie with UMass in the semifinals of the UConn Hockey Classic at the XL Center in Hartford.
The game officially ended in a tie, but with its 2-0 shootout win, eighth-ranked Quinnipiac (13-3-4) advanced to the tournament championship tonight at 7 p.m. UMass (6-12-3) faces either host Connecticut in the consolation game at 4 p.m.
The teams had played Nov. 30 in Hamden, Conn., with Quinnipiac winning decisively 6-1.
Emerson Auvenshine and Troy Power scored late first-period goals to give the Minutemen a 2-1 lead. Auvenshine recorded his first career goal. Tim Clifton tied the score for the Bobcats early in the second period.
Steve Mastalerz made 36 saves for UMass, while Michael Garteig stopped 19 shots for Quinnipiac.
Frontier 5/6 sweeps
Andy Pelc and Peter Carey each scored 10 points on Sunday to lead Frontier to a 61-28 win over The EDGE in a Suburban League grades 5 & 6 boys’ basketball game at Goodnow Gymnasium in South Deerfield.
Corbin Blight finished with 8 points and five rebounds in thewin, Ben Morse added 7 points, and Gabe Gochinski, Jared Vielmetti-Perusse, Brett Robinson, Gabe Jones-Thomson and Owen Walkowicz each added 4 points.
Troy Emond paced The EDGE with 7 points, and Colin Brechenser added 4 points.
On Saturday, Frontier used a 16-4 run to start the second half to overtake Turners Falls, 48-41, in a battle of unbeatens in Turners Falls.
Jones-Thomson and Pelc scored 12 points apiece, and Walkowicz collected 6 points and six rebounds. Gochinski, Vielmetti-Perusse and Blight each had 4 points.
Marcus Sanders led Turners with 15 points. Anthony Peterson finished with 8 points, and Jake Dodge added 5 points.
Frontier 7/8 wins
Ben Litskoski and Hunter Campbell each scored 13 points and Frontier defeated Turners Falls, 49-41, in a SL grades 7 & 8 boys’ hoop game Saturday in Turners Falls.
Aaron Landry netted 9 points and grabbed three boards, while Brandyn Robinson and Noah Graves each netted 4 points.
Jimmy Vaughn led all scorers with 15 points in the losing effort.
Frontier CYO sweeps
Kate Hickey netted 8 points to lead Frontier over East Longmeadow, 31-4, in a grades 5 and 6 CYO Girls’ Basketball League game on Sunday in South Deerfield.
Marie Diemand added 6 points for Frontier, while Hunter Keller, Mandy Fuller and Tori Speth all finished with 4.
On Saturday, Frontier downed St. Pat’s of South Hadley, 23-9. Diemand and Jessica Wrisley each scored 6 points and Speth added 4 for the winners.
Frontier boys roll
Brady Burch and Rohan Edwards each scored four times to lead Frontier Evil Monkeys to a 17-1 win over Shutesbury in an Under-11 Division boys’ indoor soccer game over the weekend at Allsport Arena in Northampton.
Dylan Robinson netted three goals in the win, and Jake Hanieski finished with two goals and five assists. Dylan Martin finished with one goal and three assists, Cameron Wrisley and Payton Sladeski each had one goal and one assist, and Luke Hrinda added one goal.
Dylan Martin and Cameron Wrisley combined to make 12 saves for the winners.
Frontier girls cruise
Alicia Hancock scored four goals, and Alexa Cassis recorded three goals as Frontier defeated the Hilltown Sojourners, 10-1, in an Under-13 Division girls’ indoor soccer game over the weekend at Allsport Arena.
Natalie Denkiewicz finished with two goals and set up five more for the Red Hawks, Mia Burch collected a goal, and Sarah Zoly tallied an assist. Hannah Kantor and Zoly both played well defensively in front of goalie Marisela Ackerman who finished with 10 saves in the win.
Middle school basketball
Greenfield beats Granby
Greenfield Middle School beat Granby Junior High School 25-24 in a girls basketball game Friday night in Granby.
Reagan Hickey made a free throw with 1.6 seconds left in the game for the win.
Samantha Smith of GMS (3-0) led all scorers with 13 points. Smith also finished with 11 rebounds.
