Coffee and art in Millers Falls
Patrons sought for holiday bazaar to benefit cafe, art studio start-up
MILLERS FALLS — This weekend’s holiday bazaar on Bridge Street is a promotion and fundraiser for a planned multi-purpose art space and cafe, both significant additions to a village center that has been relatively empty since the end of the local industrial economy.
Molly Weiss said she has been teaching art in New York for the past five years and through a series of circumstances, including an artist’s residency in western Massachusetts, wound up meeting the owners of the People’s Bakery in Millers Falls.
As a wholesale business, the bakery flies mostly under the radar at its 16 Bridge St. location, but it also has space to spare.
If all goes as planned, Weiss said, the 12,000-square-foot space will be home to a cafe, artists’ studios available through application, art class space and a music venue. Weiss said her partner, musician Daniel Cutler, came on board with the music component and is concerning himself with the People’s Bakery cafe.
To make these dreams a reality, Weiss has launched a fundraising campaign on crowd-sourcing site Kickstarter.com.
The holiday bazaar Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the 16 Bridge St. location will showcase the work of local artists and other products, with a sound healing workshop Saturday and a female empowerment workshop Sunday.
A portion of proceeds from the all-comers art show will go to the Millers Studios Kickstarter campaign, which aims to raise $30,000 by Dec. 25 to renovate the space and buy the necessary equipment for the cafe. As of Wednesday, the campaign was well short of that goal.
Kickstarter campaigns work by gathering pledges from multiple donors. Pledges are only collected if the project’s fundraising goal is reached and correspond to various rewards if the project becomes a reality.
