Riverside sewer rate hike
GILL — Rates are up for the town’s 113 sewer customers.
Town Administrative Assistant Ray Purington said the Selectboard, acting in their capacity as sewer commissioners, raised the sewer rate to 15 cents per cubic foot, from 13.5 cents this month following a hearing.
The rate change should increase the average sewer-user’s total annual expenses $77.75. Purington said the increase is in response to an increase in the amount the Montague sewer system charges Gill to treat their waste, and a continuing discrepancy in the amount of water used in Gill and the amount of waste piped. Purington said the town will continue to investigate the source of this inflow. The town conducted a smoke test Nov. 20 in search of leaks or illegal connections but found no smoking gun that would account for the inflow, he said.
Tax bills incoming
GILL — The 2014 property tax bills will be mailed out in January. Tax Collector Veronica LaChance says that any pre-payments would be greatly appreciated, and pre-paying allows taxpayers to itemize a deduction for 2013. She said town officials had hoped to have sent out these bills earlier. Early payments help with cash flow.
Call the collector at 413-863-2105 with any questions.
Town Hall offices will be closed Dec. 25 to 27 and Jan. 1 to 3.
