Winds fan Temple Woods brush fire

GREENFIELD — Giving credence to fire danger warnings for high winds and low humidity, a small brush fire charred about half an acre in Temple Woods Monday afternoon.

The wooded park off Highland Avenue and Peabody Lane is also known as Highland Park and is home to Highland Pond and miles of trails popular with runners and dog-walkers.

Deputy Chief Edward Jarvis said the cause of the fire is under investigation, but the damage was minimal with a patch of mostly ground brush burned away off Bears Den Trail, near the ridge and the high tension lines.

Jarvis said it took about 15 firefighters about an hour to extinguish the fire. The Turners Falls Fire Department assisted with its brush truck.
