Greenfield announces free holiday parking in lots

GREENFIELD — The mayor has once again announced that there will be free parking in some parts of downtown during this holiday season.

There will be free parking in 10 municipal parking lots starting Thanksgiving Day and ending Jan. 2.

Mayor William Martin said it is his intention to assist downtown business owners in making holiday shopping a pleasant and festive experience for those who come to Greenfield.

“The purpose of the holiday free parking in the lots is to encourage patronage of downtown businesses,” said Martin.

Free parking applies only to kiosked municipal parking lots, because Martin said previous experience has shown that when the town offers free parking in metered spaces, the spaces become occupied by workers in the downtown area, even though the intention is to have them be for shoppers and for rapid turnover.

As always, handicapped parking will be free and offered in lots and metered spaces with proper identification.

Parking on Sunday is free throughout town.

Martin said the following municipal lots will offer the free parking through the end of the year:

∎  American Legion lot off of Wells Street

∎  Ames Street

∎  fire station lot

∎  Fiske Avenue

∎  Hope Street

∎  Miles Street

∎  Olive Street

∎  Pleasant Street

∎  behind Town Hall

∎  two municipal lots behind Wilson’s Department Store
