NORTHFIELD — Concerning local teams competing at the Western Massachusetts Division II High School Cross Country Championships at Northfield Mountain on Saturday, the future looks bright indeed.

Traversing the always demanding terrain of the 3.1-mile course at Northfield, Frontier Regional School sophomore harrier Caitlin Burnett placed 12th in a field of 142 competitors in a time of 21 minutes, 52 seconds. Emily Kaegi of Mount Greylock Regional High School was the winner in 19:20, one second off the course record set by Frontier’s Natalie Mako last year.

“It was kind of stressful,” Burnett said of the race. “I had just come from a music audition. When I started running, it just clicked. Last year was awful. This year the hill was hard, but once I got up it, I kept running and pushing forward and it worked out. Coming around the turn at the finish, I really wanted to be in the top 15. I’m really happy with my time especially with a course this hard.”

Next to cross the finish among the local entrants was Greenfield High School eighth-grader Jenna Silk, who placed 16th in 21:59.

“I did my best and that’s all that matters really. My strategy was to go easier up the hills because they’re so hard. The first hill was pretty tough, not what I was expecting,” Silk said. “The first mile I was feeling pretty confident, the next mile I was a little tired, and the last mile I was just hoping to finish.”

Burnett and Silk will be joined by a third local runner at Saturday’s Division II state meet at Gardner Municipal Golf Club. Pioneer Valley Regional School seventh-grader Audrey Corrigan came in 17th overall in 22:02 and was the 10th and final individual runner to qualify.

Mohawk Trail Regional High School’s Natasha Olanyk completed the course in 22:11 for 21st position, and teammate Lilly Wells was 27th in 22:17.

“I felt our team went out way too fast and it cost us any chance of qualifying as a team,” Mohawk coach Joe Chadwick said. “They felt that they didn’t go out too fast, but it looked like they did based on what I saw on the second mile.”

In the boys’ Division II race, the top local finisher was Mahar Regional School junior Zabien Shaw, 17th in 18:27, and Mohawk senior Josh Rode was 27th in 18:51. Tucker McNinch of Lenox Memorial High School won the race in 16:56. Shaw will be the only area boy at next weekend’s Division II state meet.

“I thought it was a good race,” Rode said. “I felt prepared for the first hill and was in the top 20 or so on the top of the hill. I struggled a little in the middle, but I had a strong finish and got the endurance I wanted this season, so I can’t complain.”
