AMHERST — On a picturesque fall day that saw most of the field struggle with scoring, Cody Booska started consistent and stayed that way.

The Franklin County Technical School senior recorded three birdies on the back nine and only record one bogey during a stellar 2-under-par 70 to easily defend his title in the Western Massachusetts Division III Golf Championships on Monday at Hickory Ridge Golf Club.

Hopkins Academy benefited from playing on its home course to capture the team championship with a total of 339 strokes. Lee High School finished second at 344 and Pioneer Valley Regional School took third at 346.

Booska had no idea how good his round really was until he looked at the leaderboard and saw that only three other players even broke 80 overall — and all three finished at 79.

“It’s crazy ... I wasn’t expecting a nine-shot win (and) only four scores in the 70s,” said Booska, who added that he shot an even-par 72 during Sunday’s practice round. I played real well all around today.”

His final numbers certainly supported that claim — Booska hit 11 of 14 fairways and 15 of 18 greens in regulation during his round.

Booska started on hole No. 1 in the shotgun-start format. After a nice up-and-down on the opening hole, he reeled off nine more pars before registering his first birdie on the short par-5 11th, where he reached the green in two shots and two-putted. He also threw in birdies on the par-4 13th and the par-5 16th before suffering his only bogey, on the par-3 17th. He missed a tricky downhill putt after his second shot from the back fringe came up well short of the cup.

Booska said he was pleased with his round as a whole.

“I thought if I could put a good number on the front, I knew on the back I could go low,” he said. “It seems like I always start off good, but then there’s usually a couple holes where I end up doing something stupid. But today I just took it one hole at time and did well.

“My goal was to not have any double-bogeys or bad three-putts, like I usually do, and I accomplished that,” he added.

Booska and Pioneer junior James Elliott — one of three players who carded a 79 — are the only area players who qualified for the state tournament, which is scheduled to be played for Monday at Wyantenuck Country Club in Great Barrington.

Lee Doiron of Pioneer and Brett Sirum of Turners Falls High School both shot 83 and tied for 190th overall. Trever Blake of Franklin Tech finished in a tie for 12th with an 84, while Turners Falls’ Ryan Lenois was 16th with a 86.

On Saturday, Sirum finished second overall and Booska placed fourth in the second-annual Pioneer Valley Interscholastic Athletic Conference Golf Championship at Veterans Golf Course in Springfield.

Elliott tied for 20th with an 85.

Noah Peterson of East Longmeadow High School was the medalist with a 73.
