Recorder/David Rainville The driver and sole occupant of a Chevrolet pickup killed when the vehicle crashed into a tree on North Leverett Road and burst into flame.

MONTAGUE — A single-vehicle crash claimed the life of the driver Tuesday night.

The driver was the sole occupant of a silver Chevrolet pickup that hit a tree at about 5:30 p.m. and burst into flames, according to Sgt. Richard Suchanek.

“It was a fatal accident,” said Suchanek. “It was pretty bad.”

The accident occurred on North Leverett Road (Route 47), just west of Route 63.

Suchanek said Montague Center firefighters were first to the scene, and had nearly put out the flames when the gas tank caught fire, engulfing the truck.

The state police accident reconstruction team was called to the scene to determine what caused the fatal crash.

Suchanek said the truck is registered to a Montague owner. At press time, police had not yet identified the body of the driver.

Route 47 was closed shortly after the accident, and hadn’t been reopened by press time.
