300-lb. bear hits downtown Athol

ATHOL — It’s not every day you get to see a 300-pound bear while waiting for a bus — but that’s what happened Thursday morning, at the intersection of Main and Exchange streets.

According to State Police in Athol, the large, male bear was reported in the vicinity between 7 and 9 a.m. After the bear had climbed a tree, State Police, Athol Police and Environmental Police officers surrounded it, to protect nearby schoolchildren and adults at a bus stop.

Environmental Police later tranquilized the bear and released it into a more remote region.
