Rowe board to meet with Berkshire school head

Looking at hiring its administrative services

ROWE — The Rowe School Committee will meet with the North Berkshire School Union superintendent on Sept. 30 to discuss joining that school union for administrative services.

Rowe’s contracts with Mohawk Superintendent Michael Buoniconti and Business Administrator Joanne Blier expire in June.

To accommodate a larger-than-usual audience, this meeting with Jonathan Lev at 6:30 p.m.will be held in the Rowe Fire Station.

Lev provides state-required administrative services for three elementary schools that serve children from Monroe, Clarksburg, Florida and Savoy.

Earlier this summer, Rowe School Committee member Cynthia Laffond, who had spoken with Lev, told fellow board members she thought joining this union might save the town money while giving Rowe more control over how the school is run.

“They don’t have all the extras that we pay for now,” she said. Those items, which are part of the current three-district cost sharing agreement, include the three-district school nurse director, transportation director and food services director.

After the Rowe school board did not join Mohawk and Hawlemont school committees in contract negotiations for sharing Buoniconti and Blier, the two administrators gave notice that they will not renew their contracts with Rowe next year. Also, the Mohawk and Hawlemont school committees gave Rowe 10 months’ notice that they are withdrawing from the three-district, cost-sharing agreement they’ve had with Rowe — verbally and in writing — over the last 32 years.

According to the Berkshire Chamber of Commerce, all three schools in the Berkshire union share a superintendent but are completely independent of each other. Students from Monroe go to the Florida school. Each school has an active parent-teacher organization that supports many programs at each schools.
