Greenfield student reps join meetings of School Committee
GREENFIELD — At tonight’s School Committee meeting, a Greenfield High School student will sit with school board members and share updates on what’s happening within school walls.
The appointments of junior Lily Richards and senior Vicki Balis as school board “student representatives” restores a partnership between the Student Council and School Committee that hasn’t occurred here in years.
Angela Mass, a high school math teacher and Student Council faculty adviser, said the monthly updates will give more exposure to events and activities happening at the high school.
“Sometimes there’s wonderful things that are happening and people in the community have no idea,” she said.
It may even convince School Committee members to check out an event or two, said Mass.
“We know that what the School Committee does is very vital. They’re thinking about our curriculum. They’re voting on our budget,” she said. “But it’s nice for them to come ... see our kids in action.”
Richards attended last month’s School Committee meeting and told members about summer events that clubs had organized and teased “homecoming weekend” festivities.
Richards, who competes in winter and spring track and is a member of the Spanish Club, feels the meetings will be an opportunity to “become more involved in the Greenfield community (and) represent our high school.”
Balis plays field hockey and soccer. She’s the editor of the school’s Key Club and is involved with the Upward Bound program that helps students prepare for college.
