Singer didn’t make ‘The Voice,’ but will make record
CHARLEMONT — Holly Mae Brown of Charlemont won’t be on NBC’s “The Voice” in the upcoming television season, but the 16-year-old local pop-country singer is headed instead to Nashville next month to record a single and film a video, if she can raise the money.
“When one door closes, another door opens,” said the Mohawk Trail Regional High School junior.
Brown, whose stage name is Holly May, auditioned for “The Voice” in Boston on June 22, and just learned on Friday that she wasn’t chosen to go on to Los Angeles and compete in a final round of auditions for the network television program.
“I got an email Friday, saying that it was a very tough decision for them to make. But, they also said that I’ve made it further (in the audition process) than most,” said Brown.
“I came this far, and I’m proud of what I did,” she said.
Before the Boston audition, Brown’s family hosted a fundraiser for her to help pay for her expenses to travel to the Boston and Los Angeles’ auditions. Her mother, Heather Brown, has started an online Kickstarter fundraiser to raise $6,500 to make a Nashville studio recording of “I’ve Been on the Run,” a song written by local singer/songwriter Una Jensen.
The money is to cover production costs for a Nashville studio recording, to help pay for the video, musicians and trip expenses.
Besides heading back to high school this fall, Brown will be performing at Mocha Maya’s in Shelburne Falls on Sept. 20, and at the Arts Block in Greenfield on Nov. 23, with Randy Smith and His Band of Merry Men.
Also, Brown was among the 10 performers chosen to compete in the Texaco Country Showdown next month at the Franklin County Fair. Brown was in the Texaco showdown in 2011, when she was 14. She also sings the “Star Spangled Banner” at many Mohawk sports events.
“Although I am bummed about ‘The Voice,’ I will keep my head up and plug away at all the new and exciting opportunities coming my way,” she said.
