Orange administrator develops town’s  short-, long-term goals

ORANGE — Town Administrator Diana Schindler has developed multi-year goals and objectives for the town with a one-year action plan.

The plan, which she presented to the selectmen at their meeting last week, involved all town departments except for water and sewer. Schindler will develop goals that include those two departments once she has had a chance to sit down with water and sewer commissioners.

Schindler said, “This is not a final document, but a living, breathing thing” that will change as she gets more feedback from selectmen, residents and department heads about the goals, objectives and action steps.

“I want to promise less and deliver more,” she told selectmen.

Many of Schindler’s objectives are projects she has been working on in the past 10 months that she has been on the job. Some of these include:

∎ Updating technology townwide

∎ Updating town bylaws

∎ Analyzing police and fire staffing patterns to maximize efficiency of resources

∎ Planning for highway improvements

∎ Planning for development of the downtown area

∎ Turning on streetlights

∎ Planning for reuse, renovation and rehabilitation of all town buildings.

Other goals have been discussed at selectmen’s meetings but have not yet been addressed, such as:

∎ Developing a fine schedule for false fire alarms

∎ Designing promotional materials for the North Quabbin region

∎ Holding public information and education sessions on the budget and town operations

∎ Creating an inventory of town-owned land for disposal and reuse

∎ Sending out a needs assessment to determine what services seniors want most

∎ Getting cost estimates for Armory improvements necessary to bring the building up to code.

A final version of Schindler’s plan will be posted on the town website sometime this fall.
