Couple struck after leaving Sunderland restaurant Friday

SUNDERLAND — An elderly West Springfield woman was struck by a passing car on Route 47 Friday night and was taken by ambulance to Baystate Medical Center, but her injuries did not appear to be serious, police said.

According to Sunderland Chief Jeffrey Gilbert, Kathleen Moynihan, 73, was hit after she and her husband, Dennis Moynihan, had left the Blue Heron restaurant at about 9:20 p.m. and were crossing Route 47. The driver, Jason Santiago, 38, of Shutesbury, was headed south and told police he did not see the couple, Gilbert said.

Kathleen Moynihan was taken to Baystate Medical Center with a laceration, while her husband was just grazed by a side-view mirror on Santiago’s car and refused treatment, Gilbert said. The chief added that he believed Kathleen Moynihan was treated and released from the hospital that evening. A Baystate spokeswoman said Moynihan was treated and released.

Santiago was cited for failure to slow for pedestrians, Gilbert said. The accident remains under investigation, he said.
