Erving fire chief’s status makes Monday town meeting agenda

ERVING — Town Moderator Richard Peabody prefaced Monday’s unusually well-attended special town meeting with a warning.

“Any discussion we may want to have relating to the current fire chief’s employment is not related to this town meeting,” Peabody said.

Peabody said he had been advised by the town administrator and lawyer not to allow that particular discussion. Discussion will be on the agenda, he said, at the next Board of Selectmen’s meeting.

The Board of Selectmen this year opted to seek applicants for chief of the town’s call fire department, a position held by longtime Erving firefighter Almon “Bud” Meattey.

Meattey’s supporters began a “Support Bud Meattey For Erving Fire Chief” page on social media website Facebook.com. Town Administrator Thomas Sharp said four supporters brought a petition to this week’s meeting, with at least 100 signatures, the upshot of which is that they are on the agenda to address the Board of Selectmen during Monday’s meeting. The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in the Erving Town Hall.

The selectmen earlier this month appointed a search committee: Joe Newton, William Bembury, Pete Sanders, Leonard Clark, Mike Hastings, Police Chief Christopher Blair and Selectman Margaret Sullivan, according to meeting minutes.

Sharp said this committee is still meeting and has not produced a recommendation.

The board had originally envisioned a July 1 appointment. Sharp said he will recommend the appointment be delayed until the search committee has completed the search.
