GREENFIELD — Police have found a homeless man who was reported missing after tent was found washed up along the Green River earlier this week.

Daniel Hamel, 53, was reported missing on Tuesday by an acquaintance, according to Greenfield Police Sgt. Mark Williams.

“He was located at a friend’s house, high and dry,” said Sgt. David Rice. He said police were given the man’s whereabouts in a Wednesday phone call.

A friend had visited Hamel on Monday at his camp set up in the area of the bike path along the Green River west of Oak Courts. When the friend returned the next day, he found Hamel’s tent washed away by the rain-swollen river.

The discovery set off an hours-long search Tuesday afternoon off Colrain Road. Local police, the Turners Falls Fire Department and the Northfield Dive Rescue Team searched for the man on land and in the river. The search was called off at 5:15 p.m.

Hamel does not face any criminal charges.
