Letter: End of a run?

Forty years ago this summer, a Motorcycle Hill Climb was started at the hill next to what used to be Abecrombie School in east Greenfield. For those not familiar with the sport, the object is to be the motorcycle rider with the fastest time to the top of the hill. It was started by a local man, Philip Hunter. He, along with his sons, were all motorcycle enthusiasts and loved the sport. That love was passed along to Hunter’s granddaughter, who continues the tradition in her grandfather’s footsteps today.

Unfortunately, this year’s Greenfield Hill Climb, which has been named the “Phil Hunter Memorial Hill Climb,” in Hunter’s honor, maybe the last that the New England Hill Climbers Association will host in Greenfield. As it was explained to me, it has been made very difficult for the Hill Climbers to host this event here by the Town of Greenfield. There are just “too many hoops” they are expected to jump through, as it was told to me. It’s unfortunate that after 40 years this event will cease ...

I encourage everyone to come out to the “Phil Hunter Memorial Hill Climb” on June 30 at noon. Not only for a great time, but to honor the memory of the man that this hill climb is held in honor of.
