Letter: Restore funding
I appreciated reading Penny Rickett’s letter to the editor on May 2. Her concern about what it is like to “Live Below the Line” is of immediate concern for Massachusetts families. In May, both the Senate and the House worked on the Farm Bill, which is how SNAP is funded. Recently, the Agriculture committees “marked up” the bill, where they literally scratched out funding and changed eligibility with a stroke of a pen. Proposed SNAP cuts total $4 billion in the Senate and $20 billion in the House. Part of the planned cut is the “Heat and Eat” Program in Massachusetts. If this cut becomes law, states can no longer afford to pay benefits for many low income families to pay their energy bills. These proposed cuts will LITERALLY force families to choose between heating or eating. Call your Legislature today and urge them to restore these cuts to SNAP in the Farm Bill.
