Budgets, booze votes taken in Bernardston
BERNARDSTON — Though the school district budget was the hot topic at Wednesday’s annual town meeting, several non school-related votes were taken as well.
Voters approved changing the name of the administrative assistant’s position to town administrator, to better reflect the roles and responsibilities of the position.
Voters authorized the Board of Selectmen to allow restaurants to serve alcohol beginning at 10 a.m. on Sundays and certain holidays. Restaurants now can’t start serving alcohol until noon on Sundays. Now selectmen will have the option to grant 10 a.m. Sunday licenses on a case-by-case basis.
The early start for alcohol sales was proposed to selectmen earlier this year by representatives of the Kringle Candle Co., so that its Farm Table Restaurant could serve cocktails with Sunday brunch.
Voters also approved:
∎ $224,661 for the Police Department.
∎ $82,350 to run the Fire Department.
∎ $288,662 for the Highway Department.
∎ $40,000 from “free cash” surplus to a vehicle replacement account.
∎ $15,000 from surplus to the town building renovation account, part of which will be used to renovate the Town Clerk’s Office.
∎ $85,000 from surplus to the general stabilization fund.
Since voters followed the Finance Committee’s recommendations, the tax rate should increase by about 2.4 percent, from $16.85 per $1,000 to about $17.25.
