Letter: Happy births

I loved reading that Baystate Franklin Medical Center has the lowest rates of C-section births in Massachusetts (May 13). My experience there in 2004 was a surprise and a blessing. I planned a home birth, with The Birthplace as my back-up. In my 30th hour of labor, the home birth midwives determined that one factor presented a possible concern. When we arrived at The Birthplace, I was treated with respect and skillful care, and my wishes for a natural birth were honored. A well-meaning friend, upon learning that the concern turned out to be unfounded and that a home birth would have been fine, asked, “Are you disappointed?” I answered, “Not at all. I was shown such care at The Birthplace, it has become one of my homes.” I’m thrilled that home births have turned out magnificently for many of my friends; I’m also grateful that we have a wonderful hospital right in our area. It’s easy to take something for granted when it works well. Childbirth modes and methods can be contentious issues; when asked about my experience, I say that I labored happily at home and then delivered into the hands of an angel named Susan Peck, in a place that supports the rights and health of babies and their families. I am celebrating my son’s ninth birthday by writing this letter.
